There are places in the world where sport and scenery create something truly extraordinary. Zahara de los Atunes, a small gem tucked along the Costa de la Luz in Cádiz province, is one of those places — and for one spectacular weekend each autumn, it becomes the backdrop for one of southern Spain’s most electrifying events: the Gran Premio Atlanterra Polo & Derby.
Whether you’re a seasoned polo enthusiast, a horse racing devotee, or simply someone in search of an unforgettable Andalusian experience, this is a weekend that deserves a place on your calendar.
What Is the Gran Premio Atlanterra?
Now in its fifth edition, the Gran Premio Atlanterra is a three-day celebration of elite equestrian sport, held at the end of October in Zahara de los Atunes. The event combines two distinct disciplines: beach polo and traditional horse racing — both set against the wild, windswept Atlantic backdrop that makes this corner of Cádiz so uniquely beautiful.
The event takes place across two main venues: the historic Muralla de Zahara (the ancient fortress walls of the town), which serves as the polo arena, and the beach itself, where the horse races unfold in dramatic fashion. There is truly nothing quite like watching thoroughbreds gallop at full speed along the Atlantic shoreline.
Three Days of World-Class Polo
The polo programme runs from Friday through Sunday, with matches held morning and afternoon in the Muralla enclosure. The format is arena polo — a variant of the classic game played on a smaller, more enclosed pitch, creating an intense and intimate spectator experience quite unlike outdoor polo on open grass.
International teams from England, New Zealand, Scotland, Argentina, Uruguay, and Spain bring elite-level competition to the Cádiz coast. Sponsoring teams include some of the region’s most prestigious names: Polo de Lustau, Atlanterra, La Ina, Volkswagen Bahiamóvil, Ophir Gin, Antonio Hoteles, and Cruzcampo, among others — a line-up that speaks to the event’s rapidly accumulated prestige.
The pinnacle of the polo calendar here is the V Gran Premio Atlanterra de Beach Polo, the main trophy contested over the weekend by some of the finest polo players in the world.
The Derby: Horse Racing on the Beach
Saturday at sunset brings one of the year’s most cinematic sporting moments. The V Derby Gran Premio Atlanterra features three professional horse races — with distances of 1,200, 1,400, and 1,800 metres — as well as two amateur races that add a sense of local flavour and community spirit to the occasion.
Watching the races from the shoreline, with the Atlantic Ocean glittering in the early evening light and the silhouettes of Morocco visible on clear days across the Strait of Gibraltar, is an experience that transcends sport entirely. It is a spectacle in the truest sense of the word.
A Gastronomic Weekend, Too
The Gran Premio Atlanterra coincides deliberately with the Fin de Semana Gastronómico del Retinto — the Gastronomic Weekend of the Retinto, dedicated to the famous Retinto cattle breed native to this part of Andalusia. Retinto beef is prized for its deep, rich flavour and its exceptional marbling, and local restaurants pull out all the stops during this weekend to showcase it.
Zahara de los Atunes is already a town with serious culinary credentials. The almadraba tuna fishing tradition has shaped the local gastronomy for centuries, and you will find everything from casual beach bars serving fresh-caught fish to more refined dining rooms celebrating the finest produce the Atlantic has to offer. During Gran Premio weekend, the town is at its most festive and its most delicious.

That combination is rare, and it won’t be a secret forever.
